Why It Matters

Why Regular Oil Changes
Matter for Your Engine

Engine oil does four things: it lubricates moving parts so metal does not grind on metal, it reduces friction that generates heat, it carries heat away from the combustion chamber, and it prevents corrosion on internal surfaces. Every engine depends on oil doing all four of those jobs at the same time.

The problem is that oil breaks down. Kilometres, heat cycles, and contaminants degrade the oil over time. It gets thicker, loses its ability to flow properly, and stops protecting the way it should. Once that happens, friction increases, parts wear faster, and you are looking at expensive engine damage that could have been avoided with a routine oil change.

For most vehicles, oil should be changed every 5,000 to 7,500 kilometres. Newcastle and Durham Region get cold winters and hot summers, and those temperature swings affect oil viscosity. Cold starts in January are harder on thick, degraded oil. A qualified technician selects the right viscosity grade for your vehicle and local driving conditions.

What Our Oil Change
Service Includes

Every oil change comes with a full vehicle check. We are already under the hood, so we inspect the things that matter while we are there.

01

Fluid Levels

We check and top up coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and windshield washer fluid. Low fluid levels cause overheating, soft brakes, and heavy steering.

02

Filters

Air filter and cabin air filter are inspected. A clogged air filter chokes your engine and hurts fuel economy. A dirty cabin filter means poor air quality inside the car.

03

Tire Pressure and Tread

All four tires checked for proper pressure and tread depth. Under-inflated tires wear unevenly and increase fuel consumption. Low tread is a safety issue, especially in winter.

04

Brake System

Pads and shoes checked for wear. Rotors and drums inspected for scoring or damage. Catching worn brakes early saves you money on rotor replacements down the road.

05

Battery Health

Terminals inspected for corrosion and buildup. Corroded terminals cause slow starts and electrical issues. We clean them if needed and let you know if the battery is weak.

06

Lights and Wipers

Headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals checked. Wiper blades inspected for cracks and wear. Burned-out lights are a safety hazard and a ticket waiting to happen.

Oil Types

Conventional vs Synthetic Oil
for Durham Region Driving

The right oil depends on your vehicle, your driving habits, and our local climate. Newcastle temperatures range from -20C in winter to 35C in summer. That swing matters.

Conventional

Conventional Oil

Works well for older vehicles and low-mileage driving around town. If you are putting on less than 15,000 km a year and mostly driving local roads in Newcastle or Bowmanville, conventional oil at 5,000 km intervals is a solid choice. Lower cost per change.

Change every 5,000 km

Synthetic Blend

Synthetic Blend Oil

A mix of conventional and synthetic base oils. Good middle ground for drivers who do a combination of city and highway driving. Handles Durham Region temperature swings better than straight conventional. Popular choice for SUVs and light trucks.

Change every 5,000-7,500 km

Full Synthetic

Full Synthetic Oil

Best protection for high-kilometre commuters. If you drive the 401 between Newcastle and Toronto daily, synthetic oil handles the heat better and lasts longer between changes. Flows properly in cold January starts and stays stable in summer heat. Most newer vehicles require it from the factory.

Change every 7,500 km

Warning Signs

When to Get Your
Oil Changed

The standard interval is every 5,000 to 7,500 kilometres, depending on your oil type and driving conditions. But there are signs your oil needs attention sooner.

Dashboard Oil Light

If the oil pressure light comes on, pull over and check your oil level. Driving with low oil pressure causes engine damage fast. This is not a "get to it next week" situation.

Dark, Gritty Oil on the Dipstick

Fresh oil is amber and translucent. If you pull the dipstick and the oil is black, thick, or gritty, it has broken down and is not protecting your engine properly. Time for a change.

Engine Sounds Louder Than Usual

When oil breaks down, metal parts start making more noise. Ticking, knocking, or a generally louder engine during warm-up often means the oil is not doing its job.

You Cannot Remember the Last Change

If you have to think about it, it has probably been too long. Most people in Durham Region drive 15,000 to 25,000 km a year. That means two to four oil changes annually to stay on schedule.

Seasonal Change in Newcastle

Cold winters and hot summers affect oil viscosity. Getting a fresh oil change before winter ensures the right grade is in your engine when temperatures drop below freezing. Book a diagnostic check if anything sounds off.

Common Questions

Oil Change FAQ

Answers about oil types, intervals, and what to expect during your oil change appointment.

How often should I change my oil?
Every 5,000 to 7,500 kilometres for most vehicles. Conventional oil is typically closer to 5,000 km, and full synthetic can go to 7,500 km between changes. Your driving habits matter too. Lots of short trips, stop-and-go traffic, or towing means you should change more often. We check your manufacturer recommendation and advise based on how you actually drive.
What type of oil do you use?
We carry conventional, synthetic blend, and full synthetic oil. The right choice depends on your vehicle, its age, your driving conditions, and what the manufacturer recommends. We do not push the most expensive option. If conventional is fine for your car and driving habits, that is what we recommend.
How long does an oil change take?
About 30 to 45 minutes. That includes draining the old oil, replacing the filter, adding fresh oil, and running through our 6-point inspection covering fluids, filters, tires, brakes, battery, lights, and wipers. Drop off between 8 and 11 AM for same-day service.
What else do you check during an oil change?
Every oil change includes a 6-point inspection. We check fluid levels (coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, washer fluid), inspect air and cabin filters, measure tire pressure and tread depth, look at brake pads and rotors, check battery terminals for corrosion, and verify all lights and wiper blades are working.
Do I need synthetic oil for my car?
If your owner's manual specifies synthetic, yes. Many vehicles manufactured after 2010 require it. Beyond that, synthetic handles the temperature extremes in Durham Region better than conventional. Cold starts in January and hot highway driving in August are both easier on synthetic oil. If you commute on the 401 daily, synthetic is usually worth it for the longer change intervals and better protection.
Can I just get an oil change without the inspection?
The inspection is included with every oil change at no extra charge. We are already under the hood and under the car. Checking your brakes, tires, and fluids takes a few extra minutes and catches problems early. There is no reason to skip it.
How do I book an oil change?
Call 289-200-3259 or email info@newcastleautomotive.com. Tell us the vehicle make, model, and year. Oil change appointments are often available same-day. You can also visit our contact page to book online.
What areas do you serve for oil changes?
We serve Newcastle, Bowmanville, Whitby, East Oshawa, Clarington, and the rest of Durham Region. Our shop is at 222 Rolson Street in east Oshawa, right off the 401 at the Simcoe Street exit. Open seven days a week.
